Al-Qaeda leader killed in central Yemen, militants seek revenge

by Abdul-Aziz Oudah & Shuaib M. al-Mosawa

A leader of Al-Qaeda, which recently took over a central Yemeni town, was killed last Thursday by his brother, triggering a fierce battle between the group’s militants and other tribal opponents.

Hizam Al-Dhahab, brother of the militant leader, Tariq Al-Dhahab, warned his brother to evacuate the town of Radaa’, which was seized by hundreds of militants.

They took control of key government offices and were able to free some of the group’s prisoners.

Tribal sources in the town of Radda’ told the Yemen Observer that Hizam Al-Dhahab stormed the mosque, in which the group leader and his armed men were taking shelter, killing his brother and four of his men.

Loyalists of the Al-Qaeda leader then managed to kill Hizam Al-Dhahab who escaped to a nearby house which was bombed by the militants.

Tariq Al-Dhahab, the brother-in-law of Anwar Al-Awlaki who was killed by a U.S. drone in October 2011, seized Radaa’ last January and demanded some of the militant prisoners to be freed before he will leave the area.
