Flood evacuations after Sydney dam spills

  • Residents told to evacuate as Sydney dam overflows
  • “Rain records stretching back to 1886 to be broken”
  • Victorian residents on alert as more heavy rain forecast

ABOUT 1000 residents in north western Sydney have been ordered to evacuate as water gushing from the overflowing Warragamba Dam swells the Hawkesbury-Nepean River.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) says volunteers are doorknocking around the Richmond Lowlands, Pitt Town Bottoms and Grono Point on Sydney’s north-west fringes and telling residents to go to evacuation assembly points at the Windsor Baptist Church and the North Richmond Neighbourhood Centre.

The drum gates holding back Sydney’s drinking supply were opened last night, after reaching full capacity for the first time in 14 years.

Across the state, flooding has kept SES crews busy in southern NSW, with rescues carried out in Tumut, Queanbeyan and Goulburn.

The SES said some parts of NSW are being soaked by the heaviest rain in 125 years, with Canberra’s Cotter Dam even completely submerged for the first time in its 100-year history yesterday.
