SAO PAULO, Brazil — An explosion caused by a fire left one Brazilian navy personnel wounded and two others missing at a Brazilian base in Antarctica early Saturday and forced dozens of researchers to evacuate, authorities said.
The Brazilian Navy said the fire broke out in a room housing energy generators of the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Base, a research station located in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Defense Minister Celso Amorim relayed news of the accident to President Dilma Rousseff after being informed by the Brazilian naval chief, Adm. Julio Soares de Moura Neto, his office said.
RIO DE JANEIRO – A sailor was killed and two were injured in a fire that hit the aircraft carrier Sao Paulo in the early hours of Wednesday. The warship is docked at Ilha das Cobras, in Rio de Janeiro.
The Sao Paulo is the largest warship in Latin America. The injured were taken to Marcilio Dias Naval Hospital for treatment. One of the injured perished and the other was reported by the Navy to be in stable condition in the ICU.
According to a press release from the Navy, the fire broke out in a lower level in the stern of the ship at about 3:00 am, Wednesday morning. The cause is unknown. The fire was extinguished by specially trained firefighters on board ship.
