BRUSSELS – Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday called on Syrians “butchering” Syrians to turn their backs on the “criminal” Damascus regime or face justice for the blood on their hands.
President Bashar al-Assad’s regime “is butchering its own people. The history of Homs is being written in the blood of its citizens,” Cameron told a news conference at the close of a two-day European Union summit.
Describing the situation in Homs as “truly terrible,” with residents under constant shelling, with no water, no food and no medicine, he said: “It is a scene of medieval barbarity.”
As the EU issued a strong new call for the perpetrators of the violence in Syria to be brought to book, Cameron said, referring to the war crimes trial of dead Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic:
“We will make sure, as we did in Serbia, that there is a day of reckoning for those who are responsible.
“So I have a clear message for those in authority in Syria: turn your back on this criminal regime or face justice for the blood that is on your hands.”

BRUSSELS – Hungary on Wednesday (22 February) was given less than a year to lower its public deficit or have a third of its EU subsidies slashed, amounting to €495 million. It is the first time the EU commission takes such an action.
“This unprecedented step follows the commission’s repeated warnings to Hungary urging it to step up its efforts to end the country’s excessive government deficit, and its subsequent failure to take appropriate action,” the EU executive said in a statement. Hungary has overshot the EU deficit threshold of three-percent of gross domestic product every single year since it joined the EU, in 2004.
The freeze will affec one third of the EU funding for infrastructure projects in Hungary and will take effect on 1 January 2013 if the Hungarian government does not take “satisfactory”, “structural” measures to reduce the deficit, rather than the one-off measures tabled hastily by the Viktor Orban government on the eve of the decision.

Egyptian Presidential Candidate Tawfiq Okasha declared last week that the Egyptian Army will engage in armed warfare against Israel, the United States and the European Union within three months.
The declaration, made in a segment translated into English by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) on February 9, Okasha slso said that “like the Nazis, the Jews aim to rule and own the world.”
He then went on to say that Israel, America and the European Union are planning to destroy three institutions in Egypt with “exceptional malice,” namely the Egyptian general intelligence agency, the Egyptian armed forces, and the Egyptian military intelligence.
He then declared, “as of today, the war effort of the people has begun. This is essential, a war effort!”
“This is a fierce and bitter battle which began without any shooting, but will end with shooting. I say this here and now, the Egyptian army will open fire on the armies of the enemies,” he proclaimed.
When asked exactly when an armed war would begin, he replied, “within three months.”
